Description: An early Fijian ula club with large tap root carved to lobes with a single tooth set into the head. The handle has several rows of dots representing a tally system probably of ceremonial occasions rather than kills. There are also three larger indentations at the central part of the handle which are clearly intentional carving elements however if they are part of the tally system is unclear. This piece is of considerable age with the tavatava carving at the base of the handle only faintly visible. Damage to the base of the handle, however this is very old with a uniform patina over this. (U37).
