Description: A rare early Maori Wahaika hand club of substantial size with human form to the inside blade and face to the handle. The blade with rippling indicates the carving was undertaken with stone tools. The wide square suspension hole to handle, its form and the rich reddish brown patina would date this piece to the 18th century. Old damage to the left leg and base. From the collection of Ralph Cowan. His collections have been displayed at the University of Colorado, the Brauer Museum at Valparaiso University, the Porter County Historical Museum, and the Chicago Art Institute
