Description: A finely carved community sized kava bowl of elliptical form. The lug with two pierced suspension holes. This piece is of a substantial size measuring c. 59cm long by c. 16cm high. It has a deep brown patina and would date to the very early part of the 19th century or earlier.
Provenance: Formerly in the Fiji Museum with accession/collection numbers in white ‘85/30’ to the front. Further earlier accession/collection numbers are located on the base comprising ‘E’ in red and impressed numbers ‘573’.
Also de-accessioned from the De Young Museum in San Francisco and sold later at Sotheby’s auction house.
